Websites should be functional
interfaces between your company and your customers, potential customers, and
any other interested parties. Traditionally, websites have been used as
marketing tools. While this created a handy reference point for
interested parties, it has not created the user traffic that was originally
envisioned. Customers have not visited
websites or returned to the website once they have seen it, because websites
often lack functionality to draw them back. And, if your customers are not
visiting your website often, then they are not receiving the marketing collateral
that your company spent so much time and money to develope the site. Functionality, the ability to
interact with your customers in an electronic, real-time environment gives your
customers, especially your current customers, the incentive to come to your
website. Functionality may mean order placement or bookings, scheduling
information, catalog shopping, order tracking, or pricing research. In short,
functionality is direct access to the day-to-day activities that are currently
being handled by phone calls to customer service, operations, or sales. This
information can often be relayed directly to your customer much more quickly
on-line. And, if your customers are visiting your site regularly to conduct
their business, then your marketing message can be juxtaposed around the
functionality quotient to insure that your customers are getting exposed to it.
